The Victory of Light

Today is the main day of the five-day Diwali festival, one of the major holidays of Hinduism. Diwali signifies the triumph of light over darkness and encompasses a rich variety of festivities that take different shapes across India and beyond. Most radiantly, a row of lamps (Sanskrit: dipavali) is lit to request the blessings of Lakshmi, the goddess of good fortune, and colorful rangolis are drawn to welcome her. For some Hindus, Diwali marks the beginning of the New Year. Also at this time Jains commemorate the liberation (moksha) of Mahavira, the last Tirthankara, while Sikhs commemorate the return of Guru Hargobind from captivity.

Cryptic Creatures

On this day in 1967, Sasquatch was supposedly caught on film, walking through a California forest. The footage sparked decades of debate—and helped cement the creature’s place in pop culture. Let’s take a closer look at it and other cryptids.

Sasquatch

Also called Bigfoot (pictured below), this hairy beast has become part of the mythology of forests of Canada and America —North America’s answer to the Yeti. Although there has never been a verified sighting, that hasn't stopped the emergence of a cottage industry of Bigfoot hunters and memorabilia related to the creature.

Photo shows what former rodeo rider Roger Patterson said is the American version of the Abominable Snowman. He said pictures of the creature, estimated at 7-1/2 feet tall, were taken northeast of Eureka, California; from the 1967 Patterson-Gimlin film. (Sasquatch, Bigfoot) Loch Ness monster

This large marine creature, believed by some to inhabit Loch Ness, Scotland, became an international sensation after it was allegedly photographed in 1934. Although the image was later proven to be a hoax, the idea of “Nessie” remains hugely popular—and attracts thousands of tourists every year.

Chupacabra

Popular in Latin American folklore, this creature reportedly attacks animals and sucks their blood, a sort of vampire wolf. The name is derived from the Spanish words chupar (“to suck”) and cabra (“goat”), literally “goat-sucker.” No actual specimens have ever been found.
